Various Types of Herbs and Spices

There are various types of Herbs and Spices available all over the world. However most of the varieties come from and is available in India. Rightly, India has been called the Land of Spices and many varieties can be found in the country. Some of the commonly used and best known spices are anise, black pepper, black cardamom, capsicum and cinnamon. The last one is a mixture of various Cooking Spices.


Common Varieties of Spices:

Anise is characterized by its sweet and wonderful aroma. These are used either as a whole or in a powdered form. It is used throughout the country of India and is one of the widely manufactured spices as well. In Indian language it is called the ‘Suwa’. One of the common preparations in which anise are used is in making the black jelly bean. Anise is so widely used due to its positive health effect as it helps in digestion of food. In Indian ‘curry’ and ‘chutney’ preparations it is used all over the country.


Pepper comes in many shades and colors and one can find pepper varieties that are yellow, red, orange, brown, multi colored and even white. In fact white pepper is one of the best known spices. When in the ripening stage the pepper remains green and ultimately takes its color. In taste pepper can be hot and, to a much lesser degree, sweet. The red bell pepper is the sweetest variety while the black pepper has the hottest taste. Pepper has, for centuries, been one of chief spices.


The essentially indian garam masala is a mixture of various other spices. It is widely used in religious ceremonies and also in normal day to day food preparations. In taste the spice is hot. The composition of this spice is varied and depends of the spices manufacturers. Spices that compose the garam masala are cinnamon, white and black cumin powder or seeds, white or black pepper, cardamom of many varieties and cloves.
